An esteemed Russian military figure has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The incident happened on Monday morning when an bomb placed beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

The committee stated that one theory under investigation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Scene of the Incident

Teams have been sent to the scene, which is said to be in a southern district of the city.

Accounts state the explosion happened in a vehicle lot adjacent to a residential building.

History of Incidents

Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event comes after other notable incidents, such as:

• General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
• General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a Ukrainian source in the past linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are never formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.

The conflict has increasingly seen shadowy operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death continues to be ongoing.
