Hamilton Island, a Popular Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is developed, featuring a significant range of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
