Israeli citizens commemorate second remembrance of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Citizens have assembled across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Points in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- Future management of the region

Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
