New Year Celebrants Told to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Throughout the UK

Meteorologists are reporting an icy beginning to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. Readings are due to be low, meaning warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

  • Transport is expected to be disrupted.
  • The public are advised to allow extra time for travel on the road.
  • Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Issued

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is completely paramount.
