Boxing is experiencing a significant decline this year, with limited compelling matchups and far less engaging contests than typical. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight contest between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the beleaguered business. The last man standing will very likely face the world champion Usyk next season. In stark contrast, the loser is likely to lament the unavoidable deterioration of their gained recognition.

Parker finds himself on a impressive streak since his most recent setback to fighter Joe Joyce three years in the past. The understated charm of both men is enhanced by the fact that they now find themselves at the brink of a chance at a world title. Yet both are vulnerable. This is Parker's fortieth professional bout and, excluding three defeats, he has been knocked down on several occasions by different opponents. He always gets up but Wardley hits harder than any fighter he's fought – with the exception of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a power puncher when Parker secured a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight category. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the interim champion and they have already ordered Usyk to fight him, but he was sidelined. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Wardley is also in a fantastic position and he only had to wait for his opportunity. He said ‘No.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it gives him a chance to accelerate his path.”

The View from Parker

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not focused on a loss. I respect my opponent and what he has done and how he has prepared for this bout. But I am on a superior tier and I am planning to demonstrate it on Saturday.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It is a massive night for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my career and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I excel under pressure. Saturday will be the same. The separation between Parker's level and where people think I am has been a recurring narrative during my entire career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a long time, with a numerous contests on his record. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the sport for a while and had numerous grueling matches. I've also endured brutal fights and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a significantly more of those compared to me.”

But the general belief is that Parker will be too veteran, and too skilled, for Wardley. He should win a hard-fought contest with the belief that he is the prime candidate for the champion Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
