The Contents of that Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories forged from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.
Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the tunnel was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is revealed about his research, the briefcase most likely held vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would later pass on to the children Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. Throughout the play, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
