When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
