The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
