The White Sox Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Deal.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract for the high-profile player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The contract features a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16M for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for being named the MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
  • Another $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a 15% cut of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the division but representing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to 56 games due to an side strain. Despite fanning 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he slugged a equalizing home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual title triumph.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be formally introduced at a media availability on Monday.
