UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
